techniques. Wishing to remain at the forefront of modelling, Jacobs
Consultancy has developed over the past five years a technology named
Visual Simulation (VS). VS is a object-orientated, real-time, microscopic
simulation model which is based on a Virtual Reality platform, making
it interactive.
This pioneering technology simulates and allows a 3-dimensional
visualisation of passengers and/or vehicular movements through a
proposed or existing infrastructure design. Schemes need no longer
be assessed solely by alpha numeric values describing the service
levels attained, instead the project can be demonstrated by the
programs ability to realistically model movements through the infrastructure.
The VS allows the project team to experience the scheme having “come
to life” thus allowing alterations to be tested in order to
achieve the maximum potential of the proposed scheme.
VS can be applied effectively in most transport projects and in
a wide variety of other applications. It has been used by Jacobs
Consultancy to model areas as diverse as railway stations, shopping
malls, freight terminals and airports.

behavioural characteristics to individual or groups of components,
whilst also producing essential numerical output direct from the
simulation as it happens, in real-time. This valuable output can

conflicts, identifies capacity issues and hence provides excellent
